Le Bistrot Saint Roch – our favourite place after the market in Saint-Rémy

There are places you keep coming back to.

For us, Le Bistrot Saint Roch is one of them.

After a morning at the market in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, we almost always drive on to Maussane-les-Alpilles. What waits there is a quiet garden with only around twenty tables, shade under old trees and the kind of relaxed atmosphere the Provence is loved for.

My friend Gaby Herlyn has been coming here for many years, together with her friend Almut. When she sent me these photos, I knew right away: this restaurant belongs on our blog.

The kitchen is fresh, seasonal and home-made. The lunch menu changes every day, with three starters, two mains and several desserts to choose from. That market freshness is what makes it special.

This day’s table looked like this:

Starter

Caviar d’aubergine with burrata, parmesan and toasted pine nuts.

Main

Juicy cod on écrasé de pommes de terre with a delicate butter-herb sauce.

Dessert

A wonderfully light lemon sorbet with meringue, candied lemon and almond biscuits. If you prefer something fruitier, the mango ice cream with coconut flakes is just as perfect a finish.

And an apéritif à la citron, exactly right for a warm summer day in the Provence.

What we love most is the atmosphere. No rush, no overloaded menu, just honest cooking, friendly service and a garden where you happily linger a little longer.

If you are travelling through the Provence one day, perhaps after visiting the market in Saint-Rémy or Les Baux-de-Provence, a detour to Maussane-les-Alpilles is well worth it.

Trixi tip

Try to book a table on the terrace. Under the old trees, the aperitif and the daily lunch menu taste that little bit better. The bistrot is run by Joan and Vincent.
