Aimy Munich: Returning to a Special Place

There are some addresses you never quite forget. Brienner Straße 10 in Munich is one of them for me.

Around 35 years ago, this was the home of Carmen Mayrhausen’s boutique. I bought my fashion there and spent many happy hours in the store. One memory has remained especially vivid. At one of the boutique’s anniversary celebrations, the Gipsy Kings played for the guests, and I danced to their music.

When I returned to the same address during my recent weekend in Munich, those images came back immediately.

Where fashion once lived

Today, the address is home to Aimy restaurant. The entrance felt familiar even though much has naturally changed. Beyond the façade is a bright courtyard filled with palms and greenery. It is a calm corner in the centre of Munich where the city seems to disappear for a while.

As I sat there, I thought about how different the place had once looked. In those days we came for the fashion and the special atmosphere of Carmen Mayrhausen’s boutique. Today, guests come for Southeast Asian food.

Some places seem to retain part of their story even as an entirely new chapter begins.

Southeast Asian food at Aimy

Aimy describes its cuisine as Southeast Asian. The menu includes dumplings, curries, fish, seafood and dishes shaped by Thai flavours.

I can put it very simply: the food was excellent.

We began with Vietnamese summer rolls with Black Tiger prawns, asparagus relish and herbs. We also had crispy tapioca spring rolls filled with vegetables and prawns.

For my main course, I chose the summer bowl with warm Vietnamese rice noodles, crunchy salads, fresh herbs, lime Nam vinaigrette and grilled US beef short ribs. Chris chose crispy duck with a sesame and honey glaze, basil, cashews, sesame and amazu sauce.

For dessert, we had mango sticky rice with pandan. It was wonderful, a genuine explosion of flavour. Everything we ate was fresh, beautifully seasoned and carefully presented. The cooking felt precise without making the experience formal. That is exactly what I enjoy: good food, a relaxed setting and a place where you want to take your time.

The Michelin Guide also lists Aimy as a recommended restaurant for Thai cuisine. For me, however, something else mattered just as much that day. I loved the food, and at the same time I felt a personal connection to my own history in Munich.

One address, two stories

Perhaps that is why Aimy touched me so deeply. I had returned to a place where, decades earlier, I had bought fashion, celebrated an anniversary and danced to the Gipsy Kings. Now I was sitting there again, enjoying an excellent meal and looking into the same Munich courtyard.

The address remains. Its story has changed.

Even without my memories, I would recommend Aimy for its food and its beautiful courtyard. With this history, however, it is more than a restaurant to me. It is a place where two very different moments in my life meet.
