Ti Breizh. Crêpes, galettes and Breton joie de vivre in Hamburg

Sometimes France is only a few streets away. I had just come from my training session above the rooftops of Hamburg, the last chapter of my rehab weeks, and I wanted exactly this: to sit outside, enjoy the sun and eat well. So Chris and I walked to Eppendorfer Weg 161, to Ti Breizh, which means „House of Brittany“.

Ti Breizh and I go back a long way. More than twenty years ago I ate for the first time at the original restaurant on Deichstraße, and I was happy when the crêperie later opened on Eppendorfer Weg as well, not far from my Concept Store. This year I could not travel to Paris for my birthday. Since then I take every moment that gives me the feeling of being in Paris right in the middle of Hamburg. This lunch was one of those moments: a piece of France in Hamburg, and after rehab exactly right.

House of Brittany, since 1998

Ti Breizh has existed since 1998 and was the first Breton crêperie in Hamburg. The menu states the philosophy of the house right at the front: the galettes are made from 100 percent pure buckwheat, and many of the crêpiers are Bretons themselves who learned their craft in Brittany. A large part of the ingredients comes directly from there, the Val de Rance cider from Plouër-sur-Rance, the Andouille de Guéméné, plus tinned fish from Finistère. If you stroll through the small épicerie corner by the entrance on your way out, you can take some of these treasures home with you.

Sardines, a Galette Forestière and rhubarb spritzer

As an entrée I chose the Filet de sardines, sardine fillets on crisp salad with tomatoes. A simple, honest plate that immediately makes you think of the Atlantic coast.

Then came my Galette Forestière: the dark buckwheat galette with Emmental cheese, fried bacon, creamed mushrooms and a white wine onion confit that glows golden on the plate. The edges of the galette are paper-thin and crisp like lace, while the centre turns creamy. Freshly ground pepper on top, and nothing more is needed. Chris had a galette with air-dried ham and salad, which looked just as tempting. With it I drank a rhubarb spritzer, wonderfully refreshing on a sunny midday.

Brand new: soon also in St. Georg

And there is news, the Hamburger Abendblatt has just reported on it: Ti Breizh is opening its fourth Hamburg location in St. Georg, at Lange Reihe 38. So far the House of Brittany can be found on Deichstraße in the old town, at Ölmühle in the Karolinenviertel and on Eppendorfer Weg. If you are in St. Georg soon, you can look forward to galettes on Lange Reihe.

If you go
