There are places in Hamburg we always love coming back to. Hotel Atlantic is one of them. We were there twice: on a long evening in June 2025 and on an early evening in November 2025. Two seasons, two moods, and both times the same reason to return.

The aperitif at the bar
Our evening usually begins at the beautiful bar. For us that is not a way of filling time, it is a ritual: arrive first, sit down first, have a drink first – and only then go in to dinner. Behind the counter the bottle shelf rises all the way to the arched window and the deep blue chairs stand in front of it. The warm accents of light underline an atmosphere that is elegant and comfortable at the same time.
We like to be advised on what to drink. Lars knows the list, and by now he knows us a little too – we rely on his suggestion and have never once been disappointed. When the table is ready he comes to the bar himself, collects us and walks us over to the restaurant. A small thing, one you cannot take for granted, and it changes the way the evening begins.

At the window
So far we have always had a window table looking out over the Alster. In June the light still stands above the water; in November the evening has long gone dark and the glass turns into a mirror. We love both.
What makes this room is something you only notice once you have been sitting for a while: the tables are set pleasantly far apart. You can hear each other. Nobody is breathing down your neck, nobody walks past at the wrong moment. That calm, undisturbed atmosphere is the real luxury of the house – after demanding days an evening here is simply a tonic.

The kitchen
After that we look forward to a kitchen whose ideas surprise us again and again. It is the unusual combinations that keep us thinking: ingredients you would never have put together, which on the plate then seem entirely self-evident.

In June 2025, for instance, white asparagus with a crisp crust on a dark, foamy sauce, with a green dot of herbs beside it.

The June evening also had its petits fours, on a wooden tray filled with coffee beans. Three kinds, set out in rows, with the coffee.

The second evening, in November 2025, began earlier. It was dark outside, a tea light stood on the table, and we were sitting by the window again.

With it, tomatoes in every colour, with dots of green oil, small spheres and a pale quenelle in the middle – a summer vegetable in the middle of autumn, and that was precisely the surprise.

And at the end a dessert, pale on a pink sauce, with fresh mint and a fine curved sugar decoration.
And Lars
And Lars, who guides us through the evening with quite exceptional attentiveness. His attentiveness is always there without ever being intrusive. It is exactly that ease we value in his service.
On one occasion it was about more than dinner for two: for a special occasion among our friends, Lars organised a champagne reception – beautifully prepared from the first conversation to the last detail, without our having to look after anything. For us that occasion, too, was a fine example of how much personal hospitality matters.

It is exactly this mixture of atmosphere, pleasure and hospitality that makes the Atlantic so special for us.
